DNS Propagation Explained (Why It Takes Time)

Estimated reading: 1 minute

DNS changes are not instant. When you update DNS, internet providers and devices may keep the old result temporarily. This is called DNS caching.

Typical timing

  • Often: 1–6 hours
  • Sometimes: up to 24–48 hours

Why different people see different results

Some visitors may see the new site while others still see the old site because their ISP or device has cached the old DNS.

What you should do during propagation

  • Avoid making repeated DNS changes quickly
  • Keep records consistent (don’t switch IPs back and forth)
  • Test using multiple networks to see real progress

Common mistakes during propagation

  • Assuming the change failed too early
  • Editing DNS at the wrong provider (your DNS may be hosted somewhere else)
  • Forgetting to update www while only updating @
